About This Blog

My photo
I have loved things Country and Western all of my life. I have loved the ranches and farms, the work, the fields, the barns, livestock, and the food. I was born and raised in Kentucky where I learned to ride and care for horses. Most of my family lived on farms and/or were livestock producers. I have raised various livestock and poultry over the years.I have sold livestock feed and minerals in two states. My big hats and boots are only an outward manifestation of the country life I hold dear to my heart. With the help of rhyme or short story, in recipes or photos, I make an effort in this blog to put into words my day to day observations of all things rural; the things that I see and hear, from under my hat. All poems and short stories, unless noted otherwise, are authored by me. I hope you enjoy following along.

Cowboy Colors

Folks often talk about “colorful cowboys” and it got me to wonderin just what the colors of a cowboy were anyway. Cowboys ain’t likely to make a fashion statement on Project Runway anytime soon. I did see a supermodel in a cowboy hat once ( and little else I might add). She was something.I sat there staring wide eyed, unable to move, waiting for a real close-up. Finally they zoomed in on this beauty, and I saw just what I was looking for. It was a Bailey hat! Why Bailey and not Stetson I don’t know. But, nice hat anyway.

Oh sure, there’s a lot of color in competition shirts. And boots these days come in every color of the rainbow, on the uppers and in the stitching. But for an old cowboy what are the colors that define him? Well I came up with a few things where there might be a preference on a cowboys color list. Here they are:

Brown biscuits.

White gravy.

Blue skies.

Black coffee.

Red rock canyons

Red bandana, or blue, or green or…

Yellow moons.

Green trees, rivers, or money.

Black Angus ,Red Angus, or red and white, white, red, brown, or a mix of all… cattle

Orange sunsets... with lavender and purple skies.

Silver belt buckles (gold trim optional)

Gold belt buckles…nah, scratch that.

Turquoise anything…just not too much of it.

Pink hats. Yes pink …on cowgirls. (We ain’t that old of a cowboy )

Light blue hats. Again on cowgirls. Oh heck, any color hat or boots will work on a cowgirl.

Purple mountains.

Horses...any color and multi colored.

Red dirt, black dirt ,and pay dirt.

And the list goes on…

Yep I think cowboys are colorful after all. But one thing a real cowboy isn’t, is the color of whoever he is with.
No, a cowboy has his own true color and that’s all you get from him. He’ll stand the same no matter who he’s with. There is the color of principle, and no true cowboy wants to compromise on that.

Some cowboys are more colorful than others. There is a variety to choose from. But if you’re lookin' for a person with the real spirit of the American cowboy, well, there is one color they all have in common. True blue.
